Dyslexia in Jamaica: The Importance of Assessments
Since returning to my homeland, I find that dyslexia, a learning difficulty that affects reading, writing, and spelling, is often overlooked due to limited awareness and assessment options. As a member of the British Dyslexia Association, I understand the importance of early diagnosis, which can significantly improve the academic and personal lives of those affected. But do most teachers understand the impact dyslexia has on a child? One thing is for sure, the demand for dyslexia assessments in Jamaica is growing as more people recognize the impact dyslexia can have on learning.
Why Assessments Matter
In Jamaica, individuals with dyslexia are frequently misunderstood. Many are labeled as “slow” or “lazy” when, in reality, they simply process information differently. Without proper diagnosis, they can struggle in school, suffer from low self-esteem, and develop a negative attitude toward learning.
Dyslexia assessments provide insights into how the brain processes language. These evaluations help identify specific challenges and allow for tailored interventions, such as specialized tutoring or accommodations in the classroom or workplace. I was speaking to a mother the other day who did not know a diagnostic report could be used to get extra time, a scribe or reader for her child's CSEC examinations. There is so much for us to learn but it seems we have to dig for the answers rather than them being at our fingertips. I will be doing my bit to inform the public about this through my blog posts. One key thing to note is that, to gain a diagnosis for dyslexia and to have someone write a professional report highlighting the diagnosis, it's vital to work with a qualified expert.
Who Can Write a Dyslexia Report?
A certified professional trained to assess dyslexia can provide a detailed report. In Jamaica, the job usually falls on clinical psychologists, however in much of the English speaking Caribbean, trained professionals with credentials from the British Dyslexia Association are also utilised in assessing for dyslexia. As a member of the British Dyslexia Association myself, I can offer comprehensive dyslexia assessments in the UK and the Caribbean. My reports outline specific difficulties and provide actionable recommendations to help individuals succeed academically and personally.
Raising Awareness and Access
To support those with dyslexia in Jamaica, we need to increase access to assessments and intervention services. Raising awareness and offering affordable, quality dyslexia evaluations can transform lives by providing the tools individuals need to thrive.
